About Me
Bryony Toon is the brain behind Bryony by Design!
Pyrography is the art or technique of decorating wood or leather by burning a design on the surface with a heated metallic point. Bryony specializes in wood pyrography incorporating gouache paint in order to capture the beauty of her surroundings. She strives for her artwork to take you on a beautiful journey through the ever-changing time periods of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. She believes there is something particularly special about once in a lifetime moments lasting forever.
Bryony is inspired by the frequently shifting environment she lives in, here in the Bow Valley. Having moved from the UK to permanently reside in Banff in 2016, how could she not be inspired by the place she now calls home? She emerges herself in intricate details, explosions of colour and scenic realism.
As an artist Bryony is motivated by her love and passion for the outdoors. Using photo references she starts with bold, yet intricate line work to solidify the image and proportions of her pieces. Adjusting temperature to her wood burning tool allows her to shade seamlessly to add depth, realism and complex detailing. Finishing the images with gouache paint juxtaposes the tone and texture of the wood burnt areas beautifully, enhancing contrast and highlighting the image in a way that brings it to life.
